Peddie, John. Conquest - The Roman Invasion of Britain. Surrey, Bramley Books, 1998. 17.5cm x 25cm. XVI, 214 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective collector's mylar. Excellent condition with only very minor signs of external wear. There are important, if infrequently considered, military factors which would have affected Plautius' choice of options: logistical, geographical, political. In this innovative and much acclaimed study John Peddie argues that the organisation and supply problems of a task force of some 40,000 men and several thousand animals would broadly have dictated Roman tactics. He discusses what these may have been, examines the reasons for Vepasians's seemingly isolated foray into the West Country, and suggests that Caratacus' guerrilla campaign (AD 43-52) denied the Romans their hope of a speedy conquest. Includes the following chapters: Caesar's British Legacy, The Roman Army and its Logistics, The Landings in Kent, The Battle on the Medway, The Fall of Colchester, Caratacus 'Fighting Withdrawal, The Campaign in the West, Defeat for Caratacus, The Protagonists.
