Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Superb collection of images by one of the great jazz photographers, many captured at the Newport Jazz Festival, dates for which have been included below. One particularly fine birds-eye image shows three musicians gathered around a piano, two of them flanking the pianist, the hatted figure on the left, apparently explaining a chord voicing, is almost certainly Coleman Hawkins, the pianist possibly Bill Evans. Other images show Philly Joe Jones; Dexter Gordon (1970); Jack Teagarden and Bud Freeman (an exuberant image of the pair embracing); a great shot of Harry Carney in performance, caught through the loop of his baritone sax (narrow image mounted on card, a little stained); Bud Freeman and Wingy Manone backstage at Newport; Muggsy Spanier warming up in a marquee at Newport (1964); Johnny Hodges pictured backstage assembling his alto (1956); terrific worms-eye view of a bassist (?Gene Wright); two of a thoughtful-looking Stan Kenton; Jimmy Rushing hatted and, according to Goldblatt in his book on the festival, "wip[ing] the tears from his eyes" (1960); Maxine Sullivan (1972); vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery (shown at the piano); vocalist Chris Connor; bassist Monk Montgomery; two of an unidentified bassist in a club setting (c. 1970); two of an unidentified female vocalist; and finally, a portrait of Grand Ole Opry stars Lee "Lasses" White and Lee David "Honey" Wilds (1936), from Goldblatt's collection: "Although music accounted for a large share of Lasses and Honey's act, the two men were primarily comedians. They performed novelty songs, often parodies of current hits. Like Al Jolson and Emmett Miller before them, their act consisted of material appropriated from African-American culture, allowing white audiences the opportunity to experience, albeit secondhand, a form of entertainment which the society at large otherwise deemed wholly inappropriate" (Jason Ankeny on AllMusic website). Burt Goldblatt (1924-2006) stands as one of the leading jazz photographers, capturing countless memorable images over a long career, alongside his work as an award-winning record jacket designer. "Goldblatt used black-and-white photographs for his LP album covers, including studio shots and portraits that captured musicians in simple, unguarded moments. He also made line drawings of musicians and instruments that he used on his album covers. A lifetime jazz buff, Goldblatt got started as a jazz artist by making caricatures of Louis Armstrong and other favorite musicians he went to see perform. After the shows, he would send his drawings backstage with a request that the musicians autograph his work. At the height of his career in the 1950s and '60s, he got to know Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and others well enough to spend time in the studio or backstage photographing and drawing them while they worked. He made album covers for labels including Columbia, RCA and Decca, as well as smaller labels" (LA Times obituary, 12 September 2006). Burt Goldblatt, New Port Jazz Festival: The Illustrated History, The Dial Press (1977). 20 original "10 x 8" (254 x 203 mm) silver gelatin prints; most with studio wet stamps to verso.
