This book is a light-hearted look at the important business of growing a garden to feed a family. Chapters from January to December keep us connected to the garden all year. Themes include the rhythm of the seasons in our lives, how to make compost, digging up the earth, children in the garden, finding water in July, attracting good bugs to a garden free of pesticides, hauling in the harvest. Recipes with each chapter encourage us to eat from the Garden of Eden, even in February. Chapters explore urban ecology gardens, community gardens, school green-up projects, community-shared agriculture. They consider the power of herbs to heal and the magic of garden therapy for mind and soul.

Enid Mallory was born at Glen Stewart near Ottawa, Ontario and lives near Peterborough, Ontario. Her six previous books include: Over the Counter: The Country Store in Canada; Coppermine: The Far North of George M. Douglas; KAWARTHA: Living on These Lakes; and Countryside Kawartha. She has been gardening for many years at Lily Lake where four children shared the garden until they grew up and went away.
