Every Sunday for forty-two years, Pastor Oren Yates opened the doors of Grace Reformed Church in Harrow, Kentucky. Not once did he miss a service. Not for storms. Not for floods. Not for a pandemic that shuttered every other church in the county. The congregation called him a pillar. A man of God. The moral center of a town that had learned to trust him more than it trusted the law. Then his body betrayed him. A massive stroke leaves Oren silent, paralyzed, and locked inside whatever truths he spent a lifetime curating. The regional office sends Nadia Crane - a former prison chaplain turned itinerant interim pastor - to keep the church running while they search for a permanent replacement. Nadia has done this before. She knows the script: grief disguised as hostility, loss wearing the mask of control. She expects to stay eight weeks, preach competent sermons, and move on. She does not expect the basement. Behind a rack of choir robes, in a locked cabinet that smells like lemon polish and old hymnals, Nadia discovers forty years of leather-bound notebooks - a meticulous archive of six hundred and fourteen cases adjudicated by Oren in secret. Property disputes. Confessions of adultery. Accusations of fraud, abuse, and neglect. A parallel justice system operating in the shadow of the pulpit, complete with hearings, votes, sentences, and three cases marked with a designation that makes Nadia's blood go cold: RL. Relocated. Exiled. Erased from Harrow as if they had never existed. The most devastating case belongs to Caleb Pruitt - a man accused of a horrific crime by a woman whose husband was stealing from the church. Found guilty by a secret 3-2 vote. Driven out of town in the middle of the night. Forced to live under a false name for fourteen years. And Oren knew. Two years after Caleb's exile, Oren discovered the embezzlement himself, confronted the real thief - and never reopened Caleb's case. Never reconsidered the verdict. Never said a word. As Nadia digs deeper, she realizes the system's true architect is not the pastor lying silent in a hospital bed. It is Margot Linden - the quiet, meticulous church secretary who kept every record, attended every hearing, and has been in secret contact with Caleb for over a decade. Margot is not a woman who confesses. Margot is a woman who waits. Now someone in Harrow wants the truth exposed. Someone else will do anything to keep it buried. And Nadia - a woman running from her own father's catastrophic fall from grace - must decide how far she is willing to go to drag a town's worst secret into the light, knowing that the people she is trying to save may be the same people who will never forgive her for it.
