Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

London: Printed. New-London: Re-printed, and sold by Timothy Green. 1768 Softcover. Text block with wraps of interesting pressed tissue, with blindstamped pattern in the tissue. I’ve not seen wraps like this before. They are very unlikely ot be original. (if I had to guess, I’d say they were Victorian). First page of text is the title page. 183 pages. Measures 4.5 x 7 inches. Margins are wide and untrimmed. Introduction and appendix written by the son of the author, also named Robert. The Advertisement to the reader, at the front, is dated 1739. The Appendix is dated 1738. The Author, Bragge, was a minister in London. He is grouped among the Dissenting Ministers or Nonconformists of the strongly Anglican England of the late 1600/early 1700’s. Ownership signature on the title page, “Moses Greenleaf’s.” The best known man of that name was the great Cartographer and advocate for Maine Statehood – who lived from 1778-1834. His father, also named Moses, was a captain the Revolutionary War. Nineteenth century biographies take pains to mention that Captain Greenleaf knew George Washington, but there is little more information offered than that. Captain Greenleaf moved his family to (what is now) Maine in the early 1790’s. This book was published in 1768, so it seems more likely to have belonged to Captain Greenleaf than Greenleaf the mapmaker, originally. Printed by Timothy Green. The Green family ran print-shops all over New England in the eighteenth century. The Green family were the printers (de-facto or official) of Connecticut and Vermont and were very prominent in Massachusetts as well. The building that housed Green’s printshop is still standing. …
