Inhaltsangabe:

The intimacy and the detail of this book render human the 1996 race for the White House, showing its personal toll on the candidates and their wives. The Choice also exposes how political money, public opinion polling, attack advertising, handlers, consultants, and staff too often drive modern presidential politics. It is the essential story of the nation's most intense political drama.

Rezension: This latest offering of novelistic political reporting from Washington Post bigfoot Bob Woodward, a behind-the-scenes look at the Clinton and Dole campaigns, from the 1994 congressional elections to the final days of the '96 White House race, is just out in paperback. There's updated reporting and a new afterword, in which Woodward focuses on how Clinton won, and draws a portrait of Dole in defeat. This is the book that broke the story that Hillary communed with Eleanor Roosevelt. Sort of--it was actually a brainstorming exercise, not a seance, and besides, Hillary copped to it in a speech long before the book came out. Interestingly, according to Woodward it's a lot harder for Elizabeth Dole to talk to her husband--she has to get on his appointment calendar first.
