This book began with a simple problem: China is too important to be understood through slogans.
Since the Communist Revolution of 1949, the country has undergone one of the most dramatic transformations in modern history. It has passed through revolutionary consolidation, collectivization, famine, political upheaval, market reform, industrialization, globalization, technological ascent, and renewed political centralization. During that process, the People's Republic has produced extraordinary achievements and immense suffering, often through institutions that were responsible for both.
That complexity makes China unusually vulnerable to interpretation by caricature. For some, the Communist Party's record is primarily a story of repression, famine, censorship, and authoritarian rule. For others, it is principally a story of national reunification, development, poverty reduction, technological progress, and escape from foreign domination. Both perspectives contain important truths. Neither is sufficient.
The purpose of China Since the Revolution is therefore neither to prosecute nor to defend the Chinese Communist Party. It is to understand what happened, why it happened, and what followed.
That requires taking successes as seriously as failures and failures as seriously as successes. The Great Leap Forward cannot be softened by pointing to later economic growth. Nor can China's extraordinary industrialization and reduction of extreme poverty be dismissed because its political system remains authoritarian. The Cultural Revolution requires explanation rather than ritual denunciation; market reform requires analysis rather than celebration. The same evidentiary standards should apply to claims favorable and unfavorable to the Chinese government.
The book also resists the temptation to read history backward from the present. Mao's policies were not adopted by leaders who already knew their consequences. Deng Xiaoping did not possess a detailed blueprint for the China that emerged decades later. The survival of Communist rule after 1989 was not inevitable, nor was China's rise to the center of global manufacturing. Historical actors made choices under uncertainty, constrained by institutions, ideology, information, incentives, and circumstances that often looked very different at the time.
Another aim is to connect political history with economic and social experience. National policy matters because it changes ordinary lives: who owns land, where families may live, whether workers can migrate, what children learn, what businesses may do, how much households can consume, and how people understand their country's place in the world. China cannot be explained solely through meetings in Beijing.
As the narrative approaches the present, the questions become less settled. Contemporary China combines markets with Party control, private enterprise with state direction, global economic integration with strategic self-reliance, technological dynamism with demographic and financial pressures. Predictions of inevitable domination and predictions of imminent collapse have both repeatedly disappointed their authors.
This book offers no prophecy.
Its ambition is more modest and, I hope, more useful: to describe how a revolutionary state repeatedly reinvented itself, how those reinventions transformed the lives of more than a billion people, and how China eventually became powerful enough that understanding its history became essential to understanding the modern world.

We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
