Celebrating on the Journey - A Guide to a Catholic-Jewish Seder for 100 is a one of a kind guide that provides the reader with the essentials of a hands-on guide which will enable a spiritual encounter and "Faithing"- "Befriending" transformation. The guide is introduced with a no-nonsense set of questions and answers which will aid you in the "Plan" and "Organizational" phases of your Seder meal. These Q/A's address the critical Who, What, Why, Where, When and How issues which have to be taken into consideration in the beginning phases of your planning. If this is your communities first Seder approval steps should begin the month after Easter this year for next year. It takes 4 - 6 weeks to unfold the process before the date and time of your Seder. In the initial phase of discussion ---a short 'theological reflection' introduces a theological understanding of the Passover in reference to the Last Supper. The Seder celebration itself is symbolic of many different foods, prayers, songs and gestures. These are covered so that a complete catechesis may be done. Your guide has 14 individual appendices to which (each issue) of the process is covered. People's time is important. A core team must be developed. To achieve this end, appendices 1, 2, 3,4 and 5 are worksheets in which you can develop the core team and team members. Protocol should be followed. This must be a team effort not just several select souls. Appendix 8 contains recipies which each of the attendees of the Seder are to bring. Each family is requested to bring enough for themselves plus four extra attendees. There will be a 'sign-up' weekend at which recipes can be chosen. Concluding, the last two appendices contain: #13 Tips for a successful Seder; and, #14 Bibliography and Resources.

Who, What, Why, Where,When and How?

The "W-H" questions provide the starting point in beginning any type of organized process. The following questions and answers are provided as a catechetical overview of the Catholic-Jewish Seder Meal.

WHY ORGANIZE A INTERFAITH-JEWISH SEDER?

In the springtime both Christians and Jews observe rituals of freedom and rebirth! The Christian Easter Triduum and the modern Jewish Seder both have roots in the Passover traditions of Biblical Israel. Both communities see themselves as experiencing the liberating power of God first manifested the ancient Hebrews in the Exodus. "In every generation, each of us should feel as though we ourselves had gone forth from Egypt," is a principle held by both faiths. By joining in this ritual meal, Jews can share one of their central festivals with Christians, whose own religious heritage predisposes them to appreciate the Seder's deep spiritual significance. This makes more likely that during the table conversation mutual understanding will begin to replace stereotypes or apprehension about each other.

HOW AUTHENTIC IS OUR INTERFAITH-JEWISH SEDER?

The usual setting of a Seder is in the home where people are surrounded by family and close friends. It does not take place in a synagogue. We have adopted our Seder to a location outside the home (Church fellowship hall). Secondly, we have conducted the Seder on the evening of Palm Sunday ... it allows time; sufficient time-approximately 3 &fra1/2; hours for all rituals , reading of the Scriptures, eating of the meal and singing songs of praise. Our Seder follows the traditional order of ritual set down by Rabbis in the 5th. or 6th.century. Over the past 2 &fra1/2; decades; we as a community, celebrating the Interfaith-Jewish Seder, have developed our own ritual as well as eating the appropriate food for a Seder meal. Our Haggadot, skillfully crafted to the point of detail; gives the participant a deep opening to the story of Passover through the rituals of the Seder. No two haggadot are alike, and like all other haggadot, ours is reflective of contemporary times while closely following the required order of the Seder.

WHY MIGHT INTERFAITH-CHRISTIANS BE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN A SEDER?

There are many reasons. The Book of Exodus is part of the Christian Bible and so is indebted to the spiritual heritage of ancient Israel. In addition, Jesus ate a final meal with his friends at the Passover. While it is not clear how Passover meals were conducted in the first century, or even whether this Last Supper was a Seder (John 13:1 and 9:31 indicate it was not). Today's Catholic Mass is partially understood in a commemoration of that meal. Many Catholics can thus have a powerful experience of their shared roots in biblical Judaism by joining in a Seder with Jewish friends.

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PASSOVER FOR THE JEWISH PEOPLE?

The redemption from Egypt is the model for the redemption in the course of history and beyond into the Age to Come. The Seder guides participants through the passage-from the oppression of harsh taskmasters, through the terror of plagues until they emerge singing Psalms celebrating as free people. While the Seder overtly describes the Exodus from Egypt, it transports the participants from the past to future, closing with the hopeful cry, "Next year in Jerusalem," as a look forward to the ultimate redemption of all mankind. Perhaps because that passage is traveled by each individual at the Seder, this ritual has attracted more attention than any other in the Jewish year.
