Titel: A Catalogue of the Pre-1500 Western ...
Verlag: University of Chicago Press, Chicago, first edition, 1989
Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, xxvii, 260 pp (double-column format) , pp of plates (10 in colour). From a contemporary review: " [Saenger's catalogue supplies] meticulous descriptions, to the highest standard of contemporary cataloguing, of the manuscripts in [one of] the half-dozen major collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the United States. The great collection in Chicago has been built up in four discrete stages, the resulting mixture ranging over much of Western Europe. Two areas of particular strength are medieval Austrian codices and books containing Italian humanist texts, many of them unedited. There is also a group of liturgica of great importance, mostly collected by the somewhat (Henry) Jamesian figure Henry Probasco, a hardware magnate from Cincinnati who bought books that looked beautiful and turned out to have great textual value."
