On January 3, 1944, Lieutenant Commander Frank A. Erickson made aviation history. With all other aircraft grounded by brutal weather, the Coast Guard's first helicopter pilot lifted off from New York City carrying blood plasma desperately needed by injured sailors at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. He landed safely, the plasma reached the sailors in time, and lives were saved. In a single flight Erickson set two aviation records and logged the very first helicopter life flight in history.
