In Call of the Lake, award-winning poet Evelyn D. Klein invites readers to slow down, look closely, and experience the quiet beauty of Minnesota's natural world through a collection of lyrical, haiku-inspired poems paired with her original illustrations. With keen observation and a deep appreciation for the rhythms of the changing seasons, Klein captures the subtle details and fleeting moments that are so easily overlooked in the rush of everyday life. From the gentle movement of water and the shifting colors of the sky to the calls of birds, the changing leaves, and unexpected encounters with wildlife, each poem offers a small window into the natural world. Klein finds meaning in both the familiar and the surprising, revealing how even the simplest moments-a bird resting on a branch, sunlight reflecting across a lake, or the first signs of a new season-can inspire wonder and reflection. Her poetry encourages readers to pause and become more aware of the beauty that surrounds them. Accompanied by Klein's own artwork, the poems create an intimate journey through Minnesota's lakes, woods, wildlife, and seasons, celebrating the connection between creativity, observation, and the natural world.Thoughtful, peaceful, and visually engaging, Call of the Lake is an invitation to rediscover the extraordinary within the ordinary and to experience nature with renewed curiosity and appreciation. It is perhaps a sign of the times that well-written words allow us to see what we routinely bypass and ignore: The complex intelligences and interactions present in a nearby landscape alive with plants and animals. In Call of the Lake, Evelyn Klein's lovely collection of haiku-like poems, she renews our ability to see what is at once wonderful, mysterious, and ordinary about the seasonal activities occurring at this sleepy lake, one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes. Each small poem in this collection is drawn with careful lines from precise observations as revealing as the illustrations that adorn the book. Each poem deepens our sense that what is in plain sight is truly extraordinary. ~Emilio DeGrazia, Poet Laureate of Winona, MN-author of Seasonings and other works
