Joining a Board of Directors is a great honour. It enables you to make an enhanced contribution to the success of an organisation but it also involves responsibilities and risks.
As a director you serve at the top of a company where you have the greatest leverage and opportunity to contribute and make a difference.
You’re expected to have a broad range of skills and experience, and a high level of awareness of current affairs … and where regulation and litigation are concerned ignorance is not an excuse.
The UK Corporate Governance Code states that: “All directors should receive induction on joining the board and should regularly update and refresh their skills and knowledge... The company should provide the necessary resources for developing and updating its directors’ knowledge and capabilities.”
Most professional institutions require members to undertake and record up to 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) every year.
