From Mongolian highlands to tsunami-ravaged coasts, from Afghan war zones to the sacred River Ganges—Dr. Marc Shaw has walked the line between chaos and compassion, medicine and meaning. In Butterfly Alighting, Shaw weaves gripping, often confronting stories from decades spent as a travel doctor, humanitarian responder, and field medic across some of the planet’s most volatile and breathtaking regions.

This is not a travel book. It is a deeply human memoir of service, survival, and spiritual reckoning. With raw honesty, irreverent humour, and sharp insight, Shaw reveals what it truly means to care for others in times of disaster—and what the world can teach us when we choose to truly see it.

Whether in a pop-up clinic in post-tsunami Indonesia, a Soviet-era hospital in Mongolia, or the battlefield echoes of Gallipoli, Shaw’s journey reveals the fragility of life, the power of listening, and the responsibility that comes with bearing witness.

For readers of Paul Theroux, Atul Gawande, and anyone drawn to stories of courage, medicine, and meaning on the edge of the map.
