Beschreibung:

Quarter-cloth and boards, 8vo, 24 cm, lviii, 274 pp, plates, facs. A very detailed study of the 49 surviving books from The Abbey of St. Mary and St. Chad, "which was founded at Buildwas, Shropshire, in 1135 by Roger de Clinton, Bishop of Chester. It was at first a Savigniac house, but became Cistercian when the Savigniac and Cistercian orders merged in 1147. It was not well endowed, and the history of its early years is obscure. It was under Ranulf, Abbot of Buildwas from 1155 to 1187 that the Abbey prospered. The surviving buildings, which are considerable, mainly date from Ranulfs Abbacy, and the evidence presented by the surviving books also suggests that it was he who instituted the acquisition of books for the monastery. The Buildwas books have not previously been studied." The catalogue gives detailed information on the medieval bindings, existing or vanished. Booklabel on front pastedown endpaper, otherwise Near Fine. Buchnummer des Verkäufers
