This book examines the development of architecture and design for air travel from 1909 to the present day.
The illustrations are listed chronologically and form the basis of an exhibition that is to open at the Art Institute of Chicago in autumn 1996.
Historical material includes interior views of the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser (1946-49), the Blohm and Voss flying boat, the BV 222 under construction in Hamburg-Finkenwerder in 1937, the Martin Aircraft Company assembly factory in Baltimore in 1937 (with Martin B 10 bombers), interior views of the LZ 129 Airship Hindenburg (1931-35), the first terminal building at le Bourget Airport, Paris (1937) and La Guardia, New York (1937-39) together with aerial photographs.
Essays written by international experts on design and architecture examine many influential factors from the early days of aviation to the present day.
These essays analyse how changes in perception and the effects of encroaching urban growth have affected airport location in relation to city centers.
