The Science of Energy and Nutritional Healing

My attraction to science was inherent. From my youth, I was intrigued by the idea of drawing conclusions from observation and experience. I was particularly interested in the realm of physics, although I didn't use that word in those days. Although I am not a physicist, my perspective in my chosen profession of chiropractic has been based upon the laws of physics; first Newtonian, and now Quantum.

Physics can be broken down into very simple ideas based upon the scale or size of the matter in question. Simply put, it is not about the matter of physics; it is about the physics of matter. Great big things have a different physics than very small things.

When thinking of great big things, we can imagine our own solar system. The basic physics of the dynamic workings in our solar system is gravity, which is the foundation of Gravitational Physics. Very large objects have a gravitational attraction to other very large objects in their gravitational neighborhood. When it comes to a solar system, the neighborhood is not "down the block and around the corner." The next door neighbor in our solar system can be tens of millions of miles away.

Our home, the Earth, is routinely affected by the closest house next door, the moon. The push and pull effect of the moon's gravity is the factor that controls the ocean tides. Of course, we cannot see gravity as it does its work. In order to experience the effect, you must go to the beach and watch the change of the tides.

This demonstrates the basic problem with most energy healing-up until now, we have not had a way to measure or quantify it. In the world of science, nothing has validity until it can be measured. This can be a double edged sword. For a person of science, having objective evidence is the only acceptable way to approach any subject in a rational manner. Unfortunately, this doesn't give acknowledgement to the vast number of people who know what they feel. The people who are experienced in energy healing have a "sense" of the energy that most people cannot relate to.

In Health Care, we live in an age of objective accountability, of "evidence-based" outcomes. Health Care professionals are no longer able to treat patients unless they can measure the results of their efforts, especially if they expect a third party payor to cover it. Employers and employees alike are spending ever-increasing amounts of money to pay health insurance premiums. Although it is not unusual for patients to have health problems that are unresolved by contemporary medicine, when patients seek alternative care, insurance companies often refuse to reimburse them, saying that there is no evidence of its effectiveness.

Surprisingly, alternative care is held to a higher standard of outcome measurement than mainstream medical care. The rules for insurance reimbursement are selectively enforced. By proclaiming alternative procedures "medically unnecessary", insurance companies effectively switch the burden of proof to the alternative provider. The third party payor does not have to pay for the treatment if the provider has difficulty measuring the outcome. The patient's subjective report of improvement is not sufficient to justify third-party payment.

In order to prove the scientific validity of our energy healing technique, it must be based upon established science.
