When William Frederick Cody died painlessly at five minutes past noon on January 10, 1917, the news travelled around the world within minutes. For one day, he stole the headlines from a World War. "Buffalo Bill" had been a larger-than-life character whose legendary exploits made him one of the most famous individuals of his time. Buffalo hunter, US Army scout, Indian fighter, and finally master showman, he conceived the world famous "Wild West Exhibitions" travelling show, which toured for almost half a century from the 1870s until his death, and introduced the Wild West to millions around the world. Buffalo Bill Cody explores the man behind an extraordinary legend. This recounts stories of the man who became known as "the Barnum of the frontier". It features meetings with colourful Wild West figures including Wild Bill Hickcock, General Custer, Sitting Bull and Annie Oakley. The irony of Buffalo Bill's legacy is explored - how a real frontier hero purveyed the romanticized myth that lives on today.
