The development of our subject in recent times is certainly somewhat remarkable. Camden was the person who first arranged, with great skill, the topics of the ancient history and geography of our island from such information as his times supplied, and gave them much of their due shape and consistency. The discoveries of the two subsequent cen turies and a half afforded chiefly elucidations, and displaced comparatively little; but of late years the materials, which have been derived from the labours of modern investigators, or from other sources, are copious and striking, and often indeed so. Conclusive in the illustration they afford, as to render in many places a re-arrangement, or rather a re-con struction of the subject indispensable. The new acquisitions are required to be taken into it, and many points to be exhi bited in other lights than has been accustomed, in order to correspond with facts now ascertained, which it will accordingly be found has been done.
