Brief notes made in 1956 on the history of the Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles, a manuscript of 18 lines, in pencil, in part: "The Second Baptist Church, the oldest, of the largest, and most beautiful church on the west coast, was organized in 1885

Beschreibung

The first pastor was the Rev. S. C. Pierce, 1885-1887. The first church edifice was erected on Maple Avenue. The subsequent pastors were Rev. C. H. Anderson, 1887-1907; Rev. J. L. McCoy, 1908-1915; Rev. H. D Proud, 1915-1920; D. L. Griffith, 1921-1941; Dr. J. R. Henderson, 1941--. The present church edifice [Griffith Avenue at 24th Street] was built in 1924. In [unknown date] it was renovated and beautiful murals painted in the main sanctuary. In 1956 the church was again renovated and stain glass windows placed throughout the building." Accompanied by (1) a draft letter (ALS, 2-pages) from Toney to a Tennessee company concerning the possible purchase of souvenir plates for the church to sell and (2) an example of the church s printed wrappers for its Sunday programs (color illustrated with images of the churches, ads and a note on the church on rear wrapper, with some underlining).
