Once the costs are compiled, the engineer compares the life-cycle costs of the two bridges. The structure with the lowest life-cycle cost, all other factors being equal, is the cost-effective bridge. The engineer uses the cost classification to compare breakdowns of costs according to who pays the costs, when the costs occur, and what part of the project generated the costs. The engineer compares the technical advantages and disadvantages of each material in life-cycle cost terms.
