Reprint New York, Hoeber Medical Division, 1969. - Lewis' Practice of Surgery, Vol. 12/1 = Surgery of the Brain. - Hagerstown, 1945, 8°, 671, 11 pp., 456 Abbildungen, orig. Leinenband. PREFACE TO SECOND PRINTING "A quarter of a century has passed since Walter E. Dandy's monograph on the brain first appeared in Lewis' Practice of Surgery. The continuing demand for this classic chapter is a happy paradox in view of the many advances in every branch of medicine during this period. It also presented the Lewis Editorial Board with a dilemma. Consistent with its policy of reviewing and updating all volumes, the Board decided some time ago that extensive revision of this comprehensive treatise was inevitable. The current blueprint for Volume XII, "Neurosurgery," lists no less than 11 chapters to replace the Dandy masterpiece. To buffer the transition from all Dandy to no Dandy, the Board decided that the Dandy monograph should be made available as a separate volume. The volume is an exact duplicate of the original, as the careful reader may note from the chapter and volume references that appear in page headings. The system of pagination also follows that of Lewis' Practice of Surgery. The demand has far exceeded the modest quantity authorized for the first printing. This second printing affirms our, and our subscribers', continued faith in the Dandy magic." Paul G. H. Wolber Walter Edward Dandy (1886-1946) American neurosurgeon and scientist; considered as one of the founding fathers of neurosurgery, along with Victor Horsley and Harvey Cushing. He is credited with numerous neurosurgical discoveries and innovations, including the description of the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, surgical treatment of hydrocephalus, the invention of air ventriculography and pneumoencephalography, the description of brain endoscopy, the establishment of the first intensive care unit, and the first clipping of an intracranial aneurysm, which marked the birth of cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
