"A Book of Latin Poetry: Selections From Naevius to the Hymn-Writers" offers a comprehensive overview of the Roman poetic tradition, spanning several centuries of literary history. This collection begins with the early fragments of Naevius and extends through the Golden and Silver Ages to the devotional works of early Christian hymnographers. The anthology includes representative works from major figures such as Catullus, Lucretius, Virgil, Horace, and Ovid, alongside lesser-known poets who shaped the evolution of Latin verse.

By presenting a diverse range of styles and meters, the work illustrates the development of Latin literature from its rugged beginnings to its most polished expressions. The selections cover various genres, including epic, lyric, elegy, and satire, providing a broad perspective on the Roman experience. This volume serves as an essential resource for understanding the linguistic and cultural foundations of Western literature, offering readers direct access to the beauty and complexity of Latin poetry. It is a valuable collection for students of the classics and anyone interested in the enduring legacy of Rome's most influential voices.
