The Book Of The Bastiles: Or The History Of The Working Of The New Poor-Law is a historical book written by George Robert Wythen Baxter in 1841. The book provides a detailed account of the implementation and effects of the New Poor-Law in England during the early 19th century. The New Poor-Law was a major reform of the English welfare system, which aimed to reduce the cost of poor relief and encourage self-sufficiency among the poor. However, the law was met with significant opposition from the working classes, who saw it as an attack on their rights and freedoms. Baxter's book explores the impact of the New Poor-Law on the lives of the poor, including the rise of workhouses and the harsh treatment of those who were unable to support themselves. The book also includes a critical analysis of the government's handling of the reform, highlighting the flaws and failures of the system. Overall, The Book Of The Bastiles provides a valuable insight into the social and political history of England during a period of significant change and upheaval. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
