Robert Copeland explains how European potters - looking to profit from this demand - tried to emulate this fine tableware, most successfully on artificial porcelain and tin-glazed earthenwares. He reveals the techniques of transfer-printing from engraved copper plates that allowed British potters to give the illusion of hand-painted patterns, which could in fact be mass produced.
