Description
A chilling gothic tale of inheritance, desire, suspicion, and supernatural dread, The Blood of the Vampire is Florence Marryat’s bold and unsettling novel of Victorian fear.
Harriet Brandt is young, beautiful, wealthy, and newly arrived in Europe from Jamaica. At first she seems merely awkward and eager for affection, but those who draw close to her begin to suffer from weakness, illness, and emotional collapse. As rumors gather around her mysterious parentage and strange influence over others, society’s fascination turns to fear.
First published in 1897, the same year as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Blood of the Vampire offers a strikingly different vision of vampirism—one rooted in psychology, heredity, colonial anxiety, and social exclusion. Sensational, tragic, and provocative, it remains one of the most remarkable vampire novels of the nineteenth century.
About the Author
Florence Marryat (1833–1899) was an English novelist, actress, playwright, and spiritualist, and the daughter of naval officer and novelist Captain Frederick Marryat. A prolific and popular writer, she produced more than seventy books, including sensation novels, supernatural fiction, travel writing, and works shaped by her interest in spiritualism.
Her best-known works include Love’s Conflict, Her Father’s Name, There Is No Death, and The Blood of the Vampire. Marryat’s fiction often explored gender, class, desire, inheritance, and the limits placed on women in Victorian society. The Blood of the Vampire is now recognized as one of her most important works and a distinctive contribution to gothic and vampire literature.
