Inhaltsangabe:

During World War II, tens of thousands of Japanese Americans were incarcerated in relocation camps. Forced to leave behind almost everything they possessed, the detainees spent as many as four years in barren, overcrowded camps. On canvases and drawing pads the artist among them, professionals and novices, expressed what words perhaps could not convey - the shock and sorrow that came from being called "enemy alien" by their countrymen and from being forced out of their homes to live in inhospitable and sometimes nearly uninhabitable places. Beyond Words offers a remarkable sample of the art created behind barbed wire in American relocation centers. Seventy-seven striking paintings, drawings, and sketches, many of which have never been publicly exhibited, document the events of the relocation in a colorful and deeply moving way. Accompanying these works are the testimonies of their creators - twenty-five gifted individuals - who hare their memories of the evacuation, the tribulations of camp life, the desolate swamps and deserts in which the camps were situated, and the prison fences that encircled them. Four of the most compelling oral histories are included in their entirety, and together they provide a verbal portrait of the daily lives of those detainees who persevered in their artistic endeavors throughout their imprisonment. A concise summary of the events surrounding the internment places the artwork and oral histories to a larger historical context.

From Library Journal:

More than 100,000 Americans of Japanese descent were interned in camps during World War II. This moving book developed from the discovery of art work done by detainees during their stay in the camps. The authors found and taped conversations with some of the surviving artists. They reproduce here over 75 art works and excerpts from recollections, four in their entirety. The remembrances are even more powerful than the pictures. The authors provide three chapters of historical narrative, which curiously are neither in chronological sequence nor presented conveniently for those unfamiliar with the broader context. Nevertheless, this is, overall, a highly recommended book. Charles K. Piehl, Director of Sponsored Progs . , Mankato State Univ., Minn.
