In the thirteenth edition of the annual anthology written, curated and produced by YSJ students, bodies are transformed, secrets are revealed and taboo subjects are tackled. Some make you laugh, others devastate, all inspire. Beyond the Walls 2024 is a testament to the infallibility of creative instinct and a desire to uplift the voices of the suppressed. The unspoken must be spoken.

“This anthology represents the fearless literary and editorial work of the most recent cohort of creative writing students. Having set themselves the brilliantly difficult challenge of writing ‘the unsayable’, the stories and poems collected here seek the frontiers of language, where things are spoken that cannot be spoken, or where words give way, as one writer has it, to the sinking of teeth into skin.” Caleb Klaces, poet and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at York St John
