- Buch 1 von 5: Liz Kulp - Living a life of courage with prenatal exposure to alcohol - neurodiversity - Childhood through Adulthood
Let Liz take you on our journey — a journey of hope, dedication, and perseverance. Thank you, Liz, for your courage in sharing your story. You were a true pioneer in helping families and friends understand your journey.
In memory of Mom's Choice Award recipient Liz Kulp (1986–2024). As a young teen living with FASD (age 13), she was diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Effects (a term no longer used in medicine). Liz challenged the world to peer inside her life and her brain. Through her own writing, readers are taken on a life-changing journey that reshapes how they think about helping and understanding children with brain damage caused by prenatal alcohol exposure.
"Mom, I want to write a book about what it's like to have FAS/E (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effects). I think people need to know..." And so began Liz's and my journey writing The Best I Can Be: Living with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Effects. Liz was right — it was a story that needed to be told.
Fetal alcohol exposure remains a leading cause of cognitive challenges and intellectual disability in the Western world. According to the CDC, as many as 1 in 20 U.S. school-aged children may have a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), while community studies estimate that 6 to 9 out of every 1,000 children have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) specifically. Research and experience have shown that no diagnosis on the FASD spectrum is more or less serious than the other. Each year, tens of thousands of children born in the United States must learn to cope with this lifelong disability. It's time to move past denial: there is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink during pregnancy.cdc
