Decorated cloth, 4to, 195 pp, chiefly plates. Pages 15-195 are full-page plates of Beardsley's work, with facing notes. "It is half a century since the death of Aubrey Beardsley, the star which shone so brightly in the firmament of the Nineties, and whose work is as evocative today, now that it is viewed in perspective, as when it first appeared. Beardsley’s art belongs to no school nor tradition, and it is this paradox which makes it difficult to classify his work - he is a modern, yet a modern who was dead before Walter Sickert or Augustus John had earned recognition from the general public. It has long been felt that a volume of reproductions selecting only the best that Beardsley had to offer was overdue, and to this end R.A. Walker, for seventeen years assistant editor of the Print Collector’s Quarterly, whose knowledge of Beardsley’s work is only equalled by his admiration for it, has chosen nearly one hundred and fifty examples of the finest drawings. The publishers were fortunate in having in their possession many of the original blocks, but the greatest possible care has been taken to ensure that only first-class reproductions are included, and new photographs from the original drawings have been specially made in all cases where the existing blocks would not have yielded the best results. Paper and printing are likewise of the highest quality. Not only has Mr. Walker made the most considered and careful choice of illustrations, avoiding all juvenilia and all drawings that do not come up to the highest standard, but he has also written a long and definitive essay on the unique genius of Beardsley, having weighed and considered the verdicts of previous critics during the past half century." - from the blurb. Light foxing to endpapers, otherwise Very Good in heavily creased and edgeworn dustwrapper with tears along the hinges. Buchnummer des Verkäufers ABE-06237
