Über die Autorinnen und Autoren: Martin Chalmers is a writer, editor and translator. He has translated novels and short story collections by Erich Fried, Ernst Weiss, Herta Muller, Hubert Fichte, and Bertolt Brecht.

Elfriede Jelinek was born in Austria in 1946 and grew up in Vienna where she attended the famous Music Conservatory. The leading Austrian writer of her generation, she has been awarded the Heinrich Böll Prize for her contribution to German literature. The film of The Piano Teacher by Michael Haneke won the three main prizes at Cannes in 2001. In 2004, Elfriede Jelinek was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Erich Fried was forced to flee Vienna in 1938 after his father's murder by the Gestapo. Fried escaped to London, where he lived until his death in 1988. Throughout his life, he was a much-loved figure on the German and Austrian literary and political scenes.
