Über diesen Titel

"Behind the Wire" is a story, which begins in the days immediately before WWII, takes us through the defeat of France and the hell of Dunkirk, to the Western Desert and the eventual fall of Tobruk. There are great battles in France and North Africa, but here we also find a different type of courage. Not that which comes to men in the heat of battle, but that which refuses to submit to the privations of cold, hunger and perhaps worst of all, being powerless in the hands of your enemies. "Behind the Wire", is a story of fortitude in the face of isolation and misery, not for weeks, or even months, but for year after grinding year. "Behind the Wire" culminates in a fascinating journey, in parts more of a 'romp', through post-war Italy, immediately after Germany's defeat and the author's release from 'behind the wire'.

Über den Autor:

Albert Winter joined the Territorial Army in the dark days leading to WWII and saw service in Britain, France and North Africa, before being taken prisoner after the fall of Tobruk in 1942. From then on he was a Prisoner-of-War until May 8th 1945. From his experiences at Dunkirk and later in North Africa, Albert has gained an inner strength, which has served him well through the turbulent years since the end of WWII. During these years he has travelled the world promoting British industry and now in his eighties, still maintains a lively interest in the modern world.

We have been selling academic and scholarly books in Cambridge since 1996. Today we occupy an old warehouse on Coldhams Road, adjacent to the railway tracks leading to Ely, not too far from the airport. The site is called Restwell House. We are an internet bookshop, but visitors are very welcome. Some drop off a few boxes of unwanted books, some pick up a book to save on the postage, some just drop by to get to know us, or want to take advantage of the many bargains on our wooden shelves bookshop, which is distinct from the internet stock offered on the web. Our mission has always been to find new homes for the books we are looking after. If we cannot sell them online, we offer them at very low prices to our visitors. We try to give you a serious and dedicated service which is focussed on the individuality of each single book: its condition, its origin, sometimes even its smell. You come to us for real books, not just instances of ISBNs.
