95% of your life is driven by your unconscious mind.
What if it’s shaping your leadership and leadership mindset more than you realise?

“The best leadership read I’ve ever read.”
— Sam Conniff Allende, author of Be More Pirate

You are a person first, leader second.

Most leadership development focuses on strategy, skills and performance, yet it rarely takes into account the leader themselves as a human. The real driver of leadership behaviour sits beneath the surface, influencing how you think, make decisions, communicate, manage conflict and apply emotional intelligence under pressure.

These unconscious patterns can show up in leadership and daily life as:

• Self-doubt
• Fear of failure
• Imposter syndrome
• Stress and reactivity
• Worrying what others think of you

These patterns don’t just affect how you feel, they directly impact the decisions you make about how you live and lead, both personally and professionally.

In a fast-paced world that demands calm, stability and someone others can rely on, leadership is no longer just about what you do. It’s about who you are beneath it.

In It Begins With You, Mari Williams, The Mind Architect, introduces the Five Principles of Alternative Leadership. Drawing on over 5,000 hours of client work, including individuals featured in publications such as Forbes, and experience supporting leaders, founders and high-performing individuals in both private practice and environments such as Cambridge Judge Business School, this approach is grounded in real-world leadership and human behaviour.

A practical and structured approach to understanding and working with your unconscious mind, the book is written with humour and candid storytelling, bringing together practical tips, case studies, lived experience, neuroscience and tried and tested techniques. It’s everything you need to strengthen your life and your leadership.

Through these five principles, you will learn how to:

1. Understand how you think, including the unconscious patterns and beliefs shaping your behaviour
2. Clear the past experiences and triggers that continue to influence your confidence, relationships and leadership
3. Find your self-worth, so you can lead with greater certainty and stability
4. Understand the nuances of control, including how pressure and fear affect your reactions and decisions
5. Make and communicate better decisions, handle conflict more effectively, and lead with clarity under pressure

By addressing behaviour at its source, you can build stable self-worth, make clear decisions, improve communication and relationships, handle conflict effectively, and lead with consistency and trust.

This is not surface-level change. It is a deep understanding of what drives you, allowing you to lead and live with intention rather than reaction.

Whether you lead a business, a team, or your own life, this book will help you build leadership on secure foundations, from the inside, out.
