Home for me is County Kerry. More particularly, it is the house where I live; the place I love; the place I write, make music and dream. Growing up Irish has something of a fairytale ring to it, but this is not a gentle stroll through a fabled land. Fitzmaurices eye may be affectionate and sympathetic, but it is also incisive and thought-provoking, proud and fiercely independent. From Corner Boy to Wrenboy, musician to poet, pupil to teacher, footballer to politician all human life is here in the rural community of Ireland, stunningly described by Gabriel Fitzmaurice.Going right to the heart of Irelands culture, Beat the Goatskin till the Goat Cries brings together the best of Fitzmaurices short writings, to throw light on the man himself, his place and peers such as Bryan MacMahon, John B. Keane, Brendan Kennelly and Michael Hartnett.

Gabriel Fitzmaurice was born in 1952 in the village of Moyvane, Co. Kerry, where he still lives. He is the author of more than forty books including Im Proud to be Me and The Boghole Boys. He has been described as one of Irelands favourite poets.
