Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The Bayeux 'Tapestry' is in reality an embroidery, some 203 feet long, giving in 'comic-strip' style an account, biased in favour of the Normans, of the events leading to William's Conquest of Britain in 1066. It was made within a dozen years after the Battle of Hastings, apparently in England, for William's half-brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. But the Tapestry is more than just the Normans' view of history, a piece of propaganda; with its scenes of banqueting, oath-taking and burial, ship-building and Channel-crossing, cavalry charges and bloody slaughter, it gives us a most vivid picture of life at the end of the Dark Ages. The skilful arrangement of contrasting scenes, the mastery of composition and above all the remarkable vitality which runs through the whole make it not only a unique visual record of the last invasion of England, but also a work of art.
