Gen. Patch entered the Army in 1911 as a second lieutenant and during the Pancho Villa raids serving under Gen. John J. Pershing. In 1917, he went overseas with the first Army troops. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and received the Purple Heart. He was promoted to captain during World War I and served as major general during World War II." From Wikipedia: "The Battle of Ball's Bluff in Loudoun County, Virginia on October 21, 1861, was one of the early battles of the American Civil War, in which Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan s Army of the Potomac suffered defeat. The operation was planned as a reconnaissance to establish whether the Confederates were occupying Leesburg. Brig. Gen. Stone clashed with enemy forces. Colonel Edward Baker, tried to reinforce the Union troops, but the river crossings were delayed by a shortage of boats. Baker was killed." Good.
