Mary “Babi” Graves was born in a barn on a Tennessee farm, the daughter of Czech immigrants, and grew into a woman defined not by what she possessed, but by what she gave: food, time, encouragement, faith, and a place where people always felt welcome.

To Jason Bradley and his younger brother, she was simply Babi, their Czech grandmother whose kitchen smelled of fresh koláče, whose garden always produced enough to share, and whose home offered nearly unlimited freedom for two curious boys. Whether they were building blanket forts, conducting questionable experiments with denture tablets, climbing a dogwood tree, battling wasps, or accidentally mowing down her onions, Babi had a way of turning ordinary moments into lessons that would last a lifetime.

Babi: Memories to Morals blends family history, childhood stories, humor, and personal reflection to explore the values Mary quietly demonstrated throughout her life. Her experiences with immigration, the Great Depression, illness, loss, caregiving, and family hardship shaped an enduring example of perseverance, patience, integrity, generosity, responsibility, and Christian faith.

This revised and expanded second edition looks back with the added perspective of time, examining not only what Babi gave to others, but how her wisdom continued to shape the author as a father and as a man.

Warm, honest, and deeply personal, Babi is a tribute to the people whose influence remains long after they are gone, and a reminder that a meaningful legacy is built through the small choices we make every day.
