WHEN THE BRAIN STOPS......DOES CONSCIOUSNESS TRULY DISAPPEAR?
Discover where science really stands in 2026.Can neuroscience explain subjective experience—or only describe its neural correlates? Are consciousness, personal identity, and memory really the same thing? And what if the most honest scientific answer is still: we don't know? For decades, the public has been forced to choose between two extremes.
On one side, pop-fiction books claiming that quantum physics has already proved life after death.
On the other, a rigid reductionism insisting that consciousness has already been completely explained by neural activity.
Separate established evidence from speculation, popular myths from scientific research, and explore one of humanity's greatest unanswered questions through an evidence-based investigation grounded in neuroscience, cognitive science, philosophy of mind, psychology, biology, physics, and consciousness research.
Drawing upon the work of Roger Penrose, Stuart Hameroff, Antonio Damasio, Karl Friston, Anil Seth, Giulio Tononi, Christof Koch, Stanislas Dehaene, David Chalmers, Daniel Kahneman, Thomas Metzinger, Lisa Feldman Barrett, Joseph LeDoux, Jaak Panksepp, Eric Kandel, Michael Gazzaniga, V.S. Ramachandran, Donald Hoffman, Robert Sapolsky, Steven Pinker, Galen Strawson, Philip Goff, Daniel Dennett, John Searle, Endel Tulving, Gerald Edelman, and many of the world's leading researchers, BEYOND IMMORTALITY offers an intellectually rigorous and remarkably accessible journey into the science of consciousness.
Rather than promoting sensational claims or comforting certainties, this book carefully distinguishes what current scientific evidence supports, what remains controversial, and what is still genuinely unknown.
Giulia De Ponti brings together decades of research across multiple disciplines with intellectual honesty, analytical rigor, and exceptional clarity. Instead of defending an ideology, she compares competing scientific theories, examines their strengths and limitations, and invites readers to think critically about one of the deepest questions ever asked:
Does consciousness truly end when the brain stops—or does today's science still leave the question open?
Inside this book you will discover:
• Why consciousness is far more complex than most people imagine.
• What neuroscience actually knows—and what it still cannot explain.
• The real meaning of qualia, subjective experience, and the Hard Problem of Consciousness.
• Whether memory, identity, language, and awareness are truly inseparable.
• What happens to experience during anesthesia, coma, brain death, and altered states of consciousness.
• Why some leading scientists question purely reductionist explanations of the mind.
• Where the boundary lies between established evidence, scientific hypotheses, and philosophical speculation.
Unlike many popular books and their promises of miraculous answers and mystical revelations,
BEYOND IMMORTALITY
OFFERS
An intellectually honest exploration of one of the greatest unanswered questions in science.
If that conclusion is still incomplete, this book explains why serious researchers continue to investigate alternative possibilities.
Whether you are fascinated by neuroscience, philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, near-death experiences, or the enduring mystery of human consciousness, this book provides a balanced, evidence-based guide through one of the most important scientific debates of our time.
Part of the BEYOND LIMITS series—including The Predictive System, The Immortal Consciousness, and other titles, Giulia De Ponti conducts rigorous scientific research, making today's most complex ideas accessible to every curious reader.
