Before you believe, answer Moses first.
Can Christianity establish its claims from the Hebrew Bible before the authority of the New Testament is assumed? Before You Believe examines that question through 200 challenges to Christian doctrine, grounded in Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings.
Frans Hansen starts with the covenant given to Israel and the public promises recorded in Tanakh. The book asks readers to test later interpretations against the earlier texts they claim to fulfill.
Questions include:
- Can “fulfillment” make Torah commandments non-binding?
- Do miracles or resurrection claims override Deuteronomy’s covenant test?
- Where is the messianic world promised by the Prophets?
- Does Jeremiah’s new covenant abolish Torah or write it on Israel’s heart?
- Does Isaiah 53 identify Jesus when read in its own context?
- Can the New Testament prove a claim when its authority is itself under examination?
Each question follows a repeatable method: identify the Christian claim, examine the controlling Hebrew Bible passages, present the strongest Christian answer, identify its assumptions, and test the argument through the Seven Gates.
Those gates examine text, theme, time, Torah, Tanakh, public prophetic results, and whether a conclusion comes from the passage or is read backward into it.
For Christians examining inherited beliefs, Jewish and Noahide readers responding to missionary arguments, and students interested in biblical interpretation, apologetics, and Jewish-Christian debate.
Two hundred questions. One starting point: establish the claim from the Hebrew Bible first.
