This is a well-organized collection of information as represented by the title. Hester is sensible enough to footnote the whole with a good bibliography of periodicals that continuously offer details on new and emerging opportunities. The approval derived from awards is actually a passing honor. Poets and other writers soon learn that the best reward is a basic approval and publication in various periodicals. What the editor doesn't reveal has to do with preparation for a competition, and that would mean contest selection-specifically participating where the judges have an interest in your work. I'd even suggest furnishing letters of support together with your submission. The instructions for a contest from New York University make that very clear and I think a similar tactic would be effective for other competitions. If you have worked to get comments from artistic and academic advocates, it should follow that you present a perfect manuscript that is mailed flat. Hester supposes some attempt at book rate postage but the US Post Office regulation is very clear and inflexible and that is that any cover letter makes a bundle of pages requiring first class postage. He also dotes on the fantasy of a blind competition, where the authorship is withheld-being mentioned in a separate envelope. I don't think this is realistic. Recognition is easy enough from style, locality, and emerging voice. Ideally, the judgment should be made on the work and not on the poet, but that is equally unrealistic.A majority of these competitions require a reading fee and these fees appear to be growing each year not unlike the cost of living index. Rewards for the winners stay at the same level and usually include some cash. In the case of book and/or chapbook prizes it includes the cost of the production and, it is assumed, the distribution of the winning item. If poetic discovery is contingent on this system of rewards, we should not be surprised with the singularity of our contemporary poetry. Be surprised that poetry endures. -- From Independent Publisher
