Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Two leaves, each written on recto, with transmitting envelope. (Small dent to left margin of each leaf, else fine; envelope opened roughly, else fine). Provenance: By descent from the Estate of Robert M. Wright. Brigadier General E. S. Godfrey of the 7th Cavalry was a veteran of most of the major skirmishes of the Indian Wars, and a survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn, as well as a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. In this letter, he write Robert M. Wright concerning Leander Herron's recollections of the Box family rescue, which had recently appeared in the newspaper, and informing him he has contacted General Phil Reade about those events. He continues with a nice summary of his career: "I joined the 7th Cavalry at Fort Harker Oct. 1867 and went with the troops that escorted the Indian Peace Commission to the Medecine Lodge Camps. The Next Year I was with the 7th Cavalry in the field in Central Kansas, camping at For Hayes, Ellis Station, Fort Larned and near Fort Dodge until we went on the Sully Expedition. After our return from that expedition you may remember that the forces were reorganized, that Gen. Custer joined the regiment and that Gen. Sheridan accompanied the second expedition, when we established Camp Supplu, and the 7th Cav then under Custer took the field and fought the Battle of Washita, etc." He concludes by ordering Wright's book: " I am Commander of the Order of Indian Wars and also its Historian, so I am after data for the Society . . .Those were great old times out there. . . .".
