Original textured brick-red cloth by Edmonds & Remnants (with their ticket), boards blocked with a geometric frame in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Extremities a little rubbed, a touch of wear to head of spine. Alexander Carlyle (1722-1805) was Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a witness to the 1745 battle of Prestonpans. Although first published in 1860 this autobiography was written nearly a century earlier, covering events to the year 1770.
