Shedding light on the important interplay among attention, development, and psychopathology, this volume is the first to bring together the research in these disciplines. Chapters cover the entire lifespan and examine a wide range of different pathologies, integrating what is known about the normal development of attention and the effects of impaired attention in various atypical groups.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Jake Burack is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology at McGill University. He received a Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University in 1988. Dr. Burack has coedited 3 other volumes, including the Handbook of Mental Retardation and Development (Burack, Hodapp, & Zigler, 1997) and Developmental Psychopathology: Perspectives on Adjustment, Risk, and Disorder (Luthar, Burack, Cicchetti, & Weisz, 1997).
His research is primarily focussed on the development of attention among persons with autism, mental retardation, and typical developmental histories. His theoretical writings are about the interface of typical and atypical development. Dr. Burack's work in these areas have appeared in publications, such as the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, and Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders: A Handbook (Cohen & Volkmar, 1997).
James Enns is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, where he has been for 10 years. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1984, where he began research in two related areas of visual perception. One is concerned with changes in visual perception and attention that occur with normal human development; the other concerns the relation between low-level (preattentive) and high-level (attentive) visual processes.
Dr. Enns is an author of three previous books, one a best-selling undergraduate text on Sensation and Perception (Coren, Ward, & Enns, 1994 HB). He has published numerous articles in journals that include Science, Psychological Review, Child Development, and Developmental Psychology. He is a founding member of a company that markets Macintosh computer software for human vision research.
Dr. Enns was recently awarded a Killam Faculty Research Prize (1995) by the University of British Columbia to acknowledge his research accomplishments.
Dr. Enns and his wife, Janet, are parents to three girls, presently aged 2, 4, and 5 years. He notes that they represent the most complex developmental experiment with which he has ever been involved.
