In addition to the seven fixed vertical wires, there is one parallel to them which is moveable by a micrometer screw with graduated head. This has not been used in 1836 for any other purpose than that of finding the error of collimation. There were also two horizontal wires, serving as a guide to the observer for taking the transits at the same part of the field. These were accidentally broken in the autumn of the year without any injury done to the rest of the wires, and as one was immediately replaced and was sufficient for the purposes of observing, no change was made in the system of wires. The present system was fixed at the end of 1832. I have made no alteration in its position; nor have I moved the screws for the vertical and horizontal adjustments of the axis.
