In ancient times, mosaics were used to create extraordinary works of art, each made from thousands of tiny pieces of ceramic, marble or glass. These pieces, known as tesserae, were used by master craftsmen to give the most dazzling effects, and now you can adapt these age-old techniques to produce wonderful designs for your own home. Designed to take the mystery out of mosaics, this book will appeal to craft-makers who are looking for simple and enjoyable projects to make as gifts, or for more intricate ways to decorate their homes. The basic techniques - cutting, gluing and grouting - are easily mastered, and with the help of step-by-step photographs clearly showing all the techniques, you will quickly be able to start work. Each project also includes a colour-coded template so that you can adapt each design to your own taste and ideas.

Fran Soler studied ceramics at the Falmouth School of Art and now runs her own company, Smashing Mosaics, undertaking commissions ranging from commerative plaques to entire rooms.
