Minimal lightstain; binding slightly rubbed. English edition. / Content: This work, covering ten years of building in Switzerland, represents the personal views of two members of the Swiss Federation of Architects (BSA) which have been transposed by the author. It is divided into the following sections: the Introduction, which is an outline of cultural history in the tradition of primitive vernacular architecture (case studies by the Engineering Colleges of Winterthur and of Basle Town and Country) and the Main Section, which presents works of architecture on a technological basis and buildings that are mainly regional in character in the tradition of modern architecture illustrated by pictures from German Switzerland, French Switzerland and Ticino. What is fundamental to good architecture? What constitutes its essence without its incidentals? Any architect who is not content merely to recreate what he finds ready to hand should, in his designs, do his constructive thinking very much in contemporary terms. Many architects in Switzerland are seeking a new frame of reference in which questions of day-to-day living and free scope for the development of all powers, personal and collective, are reflected in the 'new' expression. The architectural experience acquired in Switzerland since is presented in its various interpretations in word and picture and analysed by reference to a small selection of buildings and projects in the various linguistic and cultural regions of Switzerland. An attempt is made to locate these in their geographical and historical context and to explain them particularly in terms of tradition and the following subjective criteria of architectural appraisal. / Contents: Foreword: Architecture -- / -- in Switzerland -- Plan and criteria -- Introduction: In the tradition of rural architecture -- Respect for the past as an example for today -- Ziefen, a Jura village -- Sonogno, a village in Val Verzas- -- ca -- Vicosoprano, a village in Bregaglia -- Appenzell houses in Trogen -- Documentation: in the tradition of modern architecture -- Examples from German and French Switzerland -- Architecture on a technological basis -- Map of Switzerland with selected examples -- Fritz Haller, Solothurn -- Werner Blaser, Basle -- Jean-Marc Lamunière, Geneva -- Architects' team ARB, Berne -- Max Schlup, Bienne -- Buildings in a regional context -- Atelier , Berne -- Anton Glanzmann, Lucerne -- Claude Paillard, Zürich -- Joachim Naef, Ernst Studer, Gottlieb Studer, Zürich -- Jakob Eschenmoser, Zürich -- Heidi and Peter Wenger, Brigue -- Dolf Schnebli, Zürich and Agno -- Ernst Gisel, Zürich -- Theo Hotz, Zürich -- Jean-Jacques Oberson, Geneva -- Ulrich Stucky and Hans Hostettler, Berne -- Katharina and Wilfrid Steib, Basle -- Michael Alder, Basle -- Buildings in Ticino -- Aurelio Galfetti, Flora Ruchat, Ivo Trümpy, Bedano -- Roberto Bianconi, Bellinzona -- Mario Campi, Franco Pessina, -- Niki Piazzoli, Lugano -- Luigi Snozzi, Locarno -- Livio Vacchini, Locarno -- Livio Vacchini and Aurelio Galfetti, Locarno -- Alberto Tibiletti, Lugano, and Livio Vacchini, Locarno -- Mario Botta, Lugano -- Marie-Claude Bétrix, Eraldo Consolascio, Bruno Reichlin, Fabio Reinhart, Zürich and Lugano -- Postscript: Acknowledgments and thanks -- Bibliography -- Index, list of photos.
