Verlag: Kraus International Publications, Millwood, first edition, 1982
Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xv, 356 pp, ills. 1182 entries. From the introduction: "This annotated bibliography contains those materials by and about American Indians that have appeared in publications of thirteen state-level historical societies in eleven New England and Middle Atlantic states. Coverage extends from the publication of the first volume in each series until the last volume published in 1979." The societies mentioned are: Connecticut Historical Society; Historical Society of Delaware ; Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Maine Historical Society; Maryland Historical Society; Massachusetts Historical Society; New Hampshire Historical Society; New Jersey Historical Society; New York State Historical Association; Pennsylvania Historical Association; Rhode Island Historical Society; Vermont Historical Society. From the introduction: "No guide presently exists that lists American Indian materials buried in the hundreds of volumes each of these historical societies has published. Indices to historical society publications, when they exist, list documents by author and title or by broad subject terms. Author-title indices are of little value because thorough searching or guesswork is required to determine which materials concern Indians. Subject indices, while often containing "Indian" entries, almost never convey information about the contents of the documents. Historical societies publish both primary and secondary articles in their series. Within each group, a wealth of valuable material about Indians can be recovered through a meticulous search. In the primary sources, particularly collections of letters, transcribed speeches, and diary entries, Indians are sometimes the focus of lengthy discussions or the subjects of brief comments. Papers given at historical society meetings and articles written for historical society publications are rich secondary sources of information about Indians. These documents treat topics such as religion, Indian alliances, land concepts, languages, place names. trade, treaties, British-French rivalry for Indian allies, Indian-white conflicts, and descriptions of native cultures both in the past and in the present. This bibliography lists every paper and article about Indians and those letters and journal entries or other primary materials that are discrete units dealing in their entirety with Indians."
