Public and Private Acts of Parliament, 1737-1738 From the Library of Gray's Inn Solicitor, Albany Carrington Bond (1783-1856) [Great Britain]. George II [1683-1760], King of Great Britain. Anno Regni Georgii II. Regis Magnae Britanniae, Franciae, & Hiberniae, Undecimo. At the Parliament Begun and Holden at Westminster the Fourteenth Day of January, Anno Dom. 1734. In the Eighth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second, By the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. And From Thence Continued by Several Prorogations to the Twenty Fourth Day of January, 1737. Being the Fourth Session of this Present Parliament. London: Printed by John Baskett, 1737 [i.e. 1738]. 862, [6] pp. Same general title page preceding each act, Acts V-XXXIX dated 1738. Folio (11-3/4" x 7"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, rebacked in period style with raised bands, blind fillets and lettering piece to spine, gilt tooling to board edges. Rubbing and scuffing to boards, large gouge to lower right corner of front board neatly mended, light rubbing to board edges, corners reinforced, hinges mended, faint offsetting to endleaves, armorial bookplate with autograph signature (of Albany Carrington Bond) to front pastedown. Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing, a few corners folded and untrimmed. $750. * A collection of 39 acts passed in the fourth session of the eighth Parliament of Great Britain, with tables listing the titles of the public acts and summaries of 28 private acts. Some of the more interesting acts involve restrictions on the rights of Catholics and various regulations of infrastructure and trade, including "An Act for punishing such Persons as shall do Injuries and Violence to the Persons or Properties of His Majesty's Subjects with Intent to hinder the Exportation of Corn." Also notable is an act dealing with the estate of Hugh Naish, whose son (also named Hugh) had been committed to debtors prison in 1731 and found remaining there preferable to paying his debt. When his father tried to obtain his release, it was found that the son had escaped; the Act codified an agreement between Hugh Sr. and his son's creditors to put the son's assets in trust.
