Inhaltsangabe: Living on her family's farm in the 1920's, Annie must decide whether to go on to high school or stay at home to help her mother.

From School Library Journal: Grade 5-8-A story set in rural New York during Prohibition. With a flighty older sister who's run off to town, a brother and father who work the farm, and her other siblings too young to help out, Annie is her mother's mainstay. Her teacher, Miss Osborne, offers her a chance to go on to high school, but the girl is sure her parents won't let her leave home. A thin thread of suspense holds the plot together, barely. Annie's dream is threatened when her mother becomes pregnant, again when she fears (unconvincingly) that Miss Osborne will change her mind, and again when the reverend tries to discredit the teacher within the community. Stronger elements save the book: some well-developed characters, entertaining family and school scenes, and believable dialogue. Though longer and less focused than it should be, the book also offers some interesting insights into women's options: Annie doesn't want to end up like her mother, worn out by childbirth and child-rearing, but she comes to respect her choices, and ultimately decides to stay home while the woman recovers from a difficult delivery. While Annie's dream is deferred for now, Clark hints at a sequel with a love interest. An additional title for larger fiction collections.
