Angola as a Destination: Strategy, Potential and the Future of National Tourism is a work that analyses, with rigour and accessibility, Angola’s positioning within the international tourism panorama, proposing a strategic vision for the sustainable development of the sector. Taking as its point of departure the paradox between the country’s extraordinary natural and cultural wealth and its limited global visibility, the book presents a well-grounded reflection on the structural challenges that constrain the growth of national tourism.
The work contextualises tourism as one of the principal drivers of the world economy, highlighting the opportunity it represents for Angola to diversify its economic base. Drawing upon statistical data and comparative analysis with other African destinations, the author demonstrates that the principal obstacle lies not in any shortage of resources, but in the historical absence of strategy, adequate infrastructure and consistent international promotion.
One of the central axes of the book is the analysis of recent reforms in the sector, with particular emphasis on the creation of the Ministry of Tourism, the launch of PLANATUR 2024–2027 and the introduction of the Visit Angola brand. These initiatives are presented as signals of a new results-oriented institutional approach directed towards establishing the country as a competitive destination.
The work travels through Angola’s 21 provinces, revealing their diversified touristic potential: from the Maiombe Forest in Cabinda to the Namibe Desert, taking in the Kalandula Falls, the Serra da Leba, the Tundavala Fissure and the beaches of Benguela. This territorial mapping reveals a country of continental dimensions, with a touristic offering still largely unexplored yet of enormous strategic value.
Particular attention is devoted to emerging and unexplored destinations, such as Cuanza Sul — presented as a paradigmatic example of potential awaiting development. Sites such as the Binga Waterfall, the Caves of Sassa and the mouth of the Keve River illustrate the diversity and authenticity that can position Angola within niches such as ecotourism, adventure tourism and scientific tourism.
The book equally defends the central role of the citizen in building the country’s image, affirming that every Angolan is an ambassador of national tourism. Hospitality, cultural pride and digital sharing are identified as determining factors in the promotion of the destination.
Through an intersectoral approach, the work analyses the contribution of different ministries — from infrastructure to security proposing concrete measures to improve the visitor experience. Among the recommendations, particular prominence is given to the improvement of accessibility, the simplification of procedures, professional training and the reinforcement of international branding.
Sustainability is presented as a guiding principle, advocating a development model that preserves ecosystems and valorises local communities. The book culminates in a strategic vision for 2030, setting out ambitious yet achievable targets for the growth of the sector.
More than an analysis, this work is a scientific and patriotic contribution that proposes to transform tourism into a pillar of Angola’s development affirming the country as a complete, authentic and competitive destination on the global stage.
