Deep underground in a world heritage site, there is a cave that has been the home of a population of bats for at least half a million years. What can these critically endangered bats teach us in a late capitalist world, in the face of climate change, extinctions and doom scrolling? Drawing on observations from the natural world, including paper daisies, bats, phascogales, and even the moon in our sky, this small collection of writings is grounded in ecology and explores with curiosity. Wildlife ecologist Dr Emmi van Harten blends science with philosophy, inviting us into the ecological web.

Dr Emmi van Harten is a wildlife ecologist and writer living on Djaara country with her family, chickens and inside cats. Her creative work shares stories about ecology: the environments that we are a part of, our place within them, and the diverse and elusive species we share them with.
